Our Health Standards
As dedicated members of the Australian Labradoodle Association of America (ALAA), we are committed to upholding the highest standards in health testing for our breeding program. Our adherence to these rigorous protocols ensures the well-being of our dogs and the integrity of the Australian Labradoodle breed. The ALAA’s comprehensive health testing requirements are detailed in their Paw Reward Program .
Minimum Health Testing Requirements:
- Hip Dysplasia Screening: We conduct hip evaluations through recognized organizations such as the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), PennHIP, or the British Veterinary Association (BVA). These assessments help identify and prevent the propagation of hip dysplasia within the breed.
- Elbow Dysplasia Screening: Elbow evaluations are performed to detect elbow dysplasia, ensuring that only dogs with normal results are included in our breeding program.
- DNA Profiling: All breeding dogs undergo DNA profiling via Paw Print Genetics. This process verifies parentage and maintains the genetic integrity of our lines.
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) Testing: We screen for PRA, a hereditary eye condition that can lead to blindness, using tests from ALAA-approved laboratories.
- Exercise-Induced Collapse (EIC) Testing: Our dogs are tested for EIC to prevent passing on this genetic disorder that causes muscle weakness and collapse after intense exercise.
Paw Reward Program Participation:
To demonstrate our commitment to exceeding basic health standards, we participate in the ALAA’s Paw Reward Program, which recognizes breeders who implement advanced health testing protocols.
- Silver Paw Status: Achieved by submitting clearances for EIC and PRA for each breeding dog. Additionally, an eye examination by a board-certified ophthalmologist is required every 18 months, with results submitted to the OFA for certification.
- Gold Paw Status: In addition to Silver Paw requirements, Gold Paw status necessitates ongoing eye examinations every 18 months and further genetic testing to ensure the highest health standards are met.
By adhering to these stringent health testing standards, we ensure that our breeding practices contribute positively to the health and longevity of the Australian Labradoodle breed. Our dedication reflects our unwavering commitment to responsible breeding and the well-being of every dog in our program. You can learn more about the health standards we follow at the ALAA website.
