AKC Description of the Labradoodle

AKC Description of the Labradoodle KassiLabradoodles are great pets for an active owner, and the AKC description of the Labradoodle proves it. AKC is the American Kennel Club. Agape Labradoodles in Denver explains a Labradoodle is a mixed breed of Labrador Retriever and Poodle.

The Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog in the United States according to AKC statistics. They are known for their extreme friendliness, gentleness, trainability, and even temperament. Poodles are extremely intelligent, highly trainable, and, like Labradors, very people-oriented. A Labradoodle that gets these traits may be fun-loving and affectionate, living very happily with other pets and kids. (http://www.akc.org/dog-owners/canine-partners/spotlight/labradoodle/)

Like his parents, the Labradoodle is highly active and energetic, requiring lots of exercises. They will need long walks, room to run, and plenty of active time with the family. If a Labradoodle doesn’t get enough activity, they can get bored and anxious. (http://www.akc.org/dog-owners/canine-partners/spotlight/labradoodle/)

The AKC notes Labradoodles come in three sizes, standard–about 21-24 inches tall and 50-65 pounds; medium—17-20 inches tall and 30-40 pounds; and miniature—14-16 inches at the withers and at about 16-25 pounds. Labradoodles have mid-to-long muzzles, furry dropped ears, soulful eyes, and an alert expression. (http://www.akc.org/dog-owners/canine-partners/spotlight/labradoodle/)

Labradoodles can have a variety of looks. The coat may be wavy, wiry, curly, or fleecy. The color of the dog’s coat can also be anything from cream and gold, red, chocolate, or brindle, and a few variations in between. Interestingly, there may even be variations of coat and color within a litter, with some puppies looking more like Poodles and other puppies more like Labrador Retrievers.(http://www.akc.org/dog-owners/canine-partners/spotlight/labradoodle/)

Many Labradoodles inherit the Poodle traits of being relatively dander and odor-free, and easier on people with allergies. According to the American Kennel Club, even when groomed, Labradoodles look best with a fluffy coat. But keep in mind, that a dog with a long coat will need regular brushing to avoid matting. If a Labradoodle spends a lot of time outdoors, his coat should be kept short. Labradoodles that have a silky, fleecy coat will need less brushing. All Labradoodles should visit the groomer for a bath and body and nail trim about every few months. Some Labradoodle owners choose to shave the dog’s fur to about one inch. AKC says what they lose in fluffiness they make up in easy grooming and care. (http://www.akc.org/dog-owners/canine-partners/spotlight/labradoodle/)

The American Kennel Club, report Labradoodles are healthy, with a life expectancy of 12-15 years. However, they may have some of the same health issues as their parents. Agape Labradoodles in Denver reports a good breeder will always give you the health screening information on your pet’s parents.
