What’s a Labradoodle?
A Labradoodle is a hybrid dog that comes from a Poodle and a Labrador. Not an officially recognized breed, they were originally bred in Australia and designed as a hypoallergenic guide dog.
The International Australian Labradoodle Association and the Australian Labradoodle Association are working to gain registered breed status over the next few years.
When choosing a breeder, it’s important to purchase from someone who is ethical and uses a guardian home. Please don’t purchase from a puppy mill where the dogs are not well cared for.
If you’re bringing home a new Labradoodle soon, decide how you’ll feed your new puppy. You have a few choices.
Labradoodle Dog Food
Although most people assume they’ll feed their dog a special Labradoodle dog food, that’s not the case. There are several types of meals you can feed your dog.
Like people, dogs are individuals. They respond differently to different diets. It’s best to pick a diet that works for both you and your dog.
Studies show that some dogs develop allergies or sensitivities to eating the same type of food over and over. It’s important to switch your dog’s food now and then to help avoid sensitivities.
How Much Food?
The amount of dog food to feed your dog depends on the size of the dog and the amount of exercise you give him. A rough estimate is to feed your dog between 2-4% of the dog’s ideal weight daily.
A puppy should get about 5% of his weight daily.
It’s a good idea to feed your Labradoodle the full amount of food once a day in the morning. This way, they are better satiated.
Kibble is one of the most convenient ways to feed your puppy or adult dog. It’s important to know what you’re getting if you decide to use kibble.
Look for a food that doesn’t list grain as the first ingredient. You’ll want to avoid lots of fillers as well. Look for kibble that lists meat as one of the first ingredients. Chicken, fish, or lamb meal is a good first ingredient.
Make sure it’s a meat, and it’s followed by the word “meal.” Make sure it’s not a byproduct meal, such as chicken by-product meal.
Home-cooked meals are also an option, though that’s less convenient for most people. If you’re looking to start your dog on a home-cooked diet, be sure to find a recipe book made especially for dogs.
Labradoodle dog food may also be a raw-food diet.
A typical raw-food dog diet uses raw chicken backs, ground salmon, beef, or other raw muscle meat. You’ll also use flash-frozen raw vegetables, such as carrots and peas.
The advantage of a raw diet is that pet parents who implement this type of feeding report less poop to pick up!
