We here at Agape Labradoodles in Denver love our Labradoodle breed, but is the Labradoodle personality right for you? We want to make sure that you would really love this breed too. Labradoodles can be kind, gentle, intelligent, and easy-going pets which sounds perfect. Given these qualities, are they the right breed for you?
There are a few other things you should know about Labradoodles to determine whether they have the right personality for you and/or your family.
Higher Energy Breed
The Labradoodle’s love and intelligence are wrapped up in a dog that enjoys and needs exercise and engagement. If you have time to spend with your Labradoodle daily, then this breed might just be the right match for you.
Labradoodles love to walk, run, and swim. Their Labrador heritage makes them great natural swimmers who love the water. Daily exercise and physical attention is a must to avoid bored behaviors such as chewing on shoes or destroying your landscaping. Some owners find that their Labradoodles need as much as two hours of daily exercise and play. Given the requirement for such commitment, people who work long hours or who are not home for extended periods of time may want to find a different breed to match their lifestyle.
Friendly and Intelligent
When it comes to the Labradoodle personality, you’ll notice that they are intelligent, friendly, easy-going and easy to train. This breed loves to be mentally and physically engaged with the world around them, making them ideal candidates for competitive activities such as obedience, agility, and flyball. Though the American Kennel Club (AKC) does not yet recognize this breed for sanctioned events, many hobby clubs will allow, or even encourage, Labradoodle participation.
It is helpful to note that Labradoodles are in the process of being recognized by the AKC and other purebred registries, so official AKC competition may be an option in the future. Though this breed is a breeze to train, and incredibly smart, we encourage early socialization and consistent training refreshers throughout their lives to keep them and you happy.
Other Traits and Behaviors
Labradoodles make great companion and therapy animals. They can be enthusiastic towards people and other dogs, making training even more key to preventing an unwanted furry friend in your lap on the couch (if it would be unwanted). Training will also prevent unfortunate incidents with less friendly breeds at the dog park. Because of their natural inclination to be kind and affectionate, this breed should not be used for guard or watchdog purposes. These same natural inclinations make them an excellent addition to families with children or first-time dog owners.
If a Labradoodle is left to their own devices and/or untrained, their boredom can lead to excessive barking, chewing, enthusiastic digging in the yard, and excitability issues. This can be the case with many higher energy breeds, so be sure you are ready for the commitment to exercise, training, and play.
